# Reversals

> When a conversion is reversed after you credited it, a second postback tells you to take the reward back.

Sometimes a conversion is reversed after it was credited, for example when the advertiser finds it was fraudulent or the user didn't really meet the offer's requirements. Invalid conversions aren't paid, so we send a reversal postback and deduct the payout from your earnings.

## What a reversal looks like

A reversal is a postback with `status=2`. It repeats the `user_id`, `transaction_id` and `offer_id` of the original conversion, and `reward` and `payout` are negative:

```http theme={null}
GET https://your-server.com/offerzy/postback?user_id=user123&status=2&reward=-1500&payout=-1.5&transaction_id=ofz_ne48213&offer_id=8c1f0e2a&offer_name=Kingdom%20Quest&ip=203.0.113.10&country=US&signature=9a41...
```

| | Conversion | Reversal |
| - | - | - |
| `status` | `1` | `2` |
| `transaction_id` | `ofz_ne48213` | `ofz_ne48213` (the same) |
| `reward` | `1500` | `-1500` |
| `payout` | `1.5` | `-1.5` |

The signature is made the same way, with the negative `reward` exactly as received. See [Verify postbacks](/postbacks/security).

## Handling a reversal

1. Verify the signature.
2. If you've already processed this `transaction_id` with `status=2`, answer `200` and stop.
3. Add the negative `reward` to the user's balance. Decide what happens if that takes the balance below zero: allow it, or flag the account for review.
4. Answer `200`.

The [handler examples](/postbacks/overview#a-complete-handler) already do this: they store each `transaction_id` and `status` pair once and add `reward` to the balance, which debits the user when it's negative.

<Note>
  A reversal can arrive days or weeks after the conversion, so keep a record of every `transaction_id` for at least 90 days.
</Note>

## Effect on your earnings

The reversed payout is deducted from your earnings for the month of the original conversion. If that month has already been invoiced, it's deducted from a later month instead. See [Payments](/payments#reversals-and-your-invoices).

You can see every reversal and its reason in the dashboard under **Reports > Reversals**.
